Snowy Day Fun: How to Make Snow Ice Cream

Make snow ice cream using simple kitchen ingredients and fresh snow!

The kids are home for the second day this week due to snow and cold temperatures. We have just gotten notice that schools are closed again tomorrow. It’s a lot for parents and kiddos to be cooped up in the house without the ability to go run around outside. So, when life gives you lemons snow, you make snow ice cream!

Making snow ice cream is a fun way to spend some time together in the kitchen, and if your kids are anything like mine, they will squeal with delight over this sweet snowy concoction!

Snow ice cream is made with just four ingredients plus snow; milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Combine it with the snow and you’ve got yourself snow ice cream. Of course, snow ice cream wouldn’t be as magical without sprinkles on top!

How to Make Snow Ice Cream

The first thing you’ll want to do is mix together the milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract. Whisk together the ingredients until the sugar is dissolved. I used a stainless steel bowl so I could keep the ingredients as cold as possible. Once mixed, I popped the bowl into the fridge to keep the mixture cold, and ventured outside to get 8 cups of snow.

To get the freshest snow for snow ice cream, it’s best to scrape off the very top layer of the snow and then scoop out the absolute cleanest snow you can find. Or maybe I am just being picky.

Once you bring in the snow, fold it into the liquids until it forms an ice cream consistency. Easy peasy! It takes about 5 minutes and the kiddos just loved helping out.

I scooped each boy a couple scoops of snow ice cream and let them choose their sprinkles. They enjoyed this activity and of course enjoyed eating the snow ice cream the most.

As hard as it is on us parents during snow days, I hope you make the most of it by whipping up a batch of yummy snow ice cream! It’ll be an activity (and dessert) you and your kids won’t soon forget. Don’t forget to pin this idea for your next snow fall!

Of course if you aren’t keen on making snow ice cream, and maybe you’ve just had enough of these snow days, mama and daddy could always enjoy a spiked hot chocolate.
